GIG establishes a green hydrogen player

The HyCC joint venture features a 400MW electrolyser pipeline, mostly in the Netherlands

Green Investment Group (GIG) of Macquarie and Nobian are teaming up to build an industrial green hydrogen developer.

The Hydrogen Chemistry Company (HyCC) was founded to deliver safe, dependable, and cost-effective green hydrogen solutions to enable huge industries including aviation, steel, chemicals, and refineries decarbonize.

HyCC will be able to “accelerate investments” and the creation of further large-scale projects by combining Nobian’s experience in large-scale electrolysis with GIG’s resources and project development skills.

“We have a strong technical and commercial team and a solid pipeline of significant green hydrogen projects,” Marcel Galjee, HyCC’s managing director, added.

“With the support of these two major firms, we will be able to expand our portfolio even further and become a pioneer in the safe and dependable supply of green hydrogen, contributing significantly to the EU’s aim of 40GW of hydrogen electrolysers by 2030.”

The agreement is anticipated to finalize in March 2022, with GIG and Nobian each owning a 50% stake in HyCC.

HyCC will begin operations with a dedicated team of hydrogen experts with experience in technology, manufacturing, project management, and commercial development, as well as a pipeline of over 400MW of electrolysis projects.

This includes a planned 60MW plant in the Netherlands’ north, a 100MW project near Amsterdam to enable sustainable steel production, and a 250MW project in Rotterdam to replace fossil-based hydrogen.

HyCC will be able to extend its pipeline and expand deeper into the European market as a result of the agreement.

“Green hydrogen is crucial to cut emissions across a wide range of industries that have traditionally been tough to decarbonize – from steel and chemicals to shipping and aviation,” said Kate Vidgen, head of industrial transition and clean fuels at Macquarie’s Green Investment Group.
